congratulations! your character is now stuck working in a kissing booth. how much are your smooches worth? are this person's smooches worth it to you? who knows.
"It is still early," Reo points out. "People are still looking around, too." Deciding where to spend their money. "If the third years were circulating a bit more, I might be a bit busier."
Third year girls have had more time to get over the embarrassment of approaching the kissing booth, after all, and are just generally less inclined to dissolve into blushes.
". . . if Shimizu-san dropped by, do you think Tanaka and Yuu-kun would actually kill me or would they be too paralyzed by rage to get the chance?" He can practically hear the choked accusations of defilement that would fly.
"It does take some time. The cafes are pretty busy... maybe we should get someone to hand out complimentary mints down the line once it builds up." Otherwise Mibuchi-kun's going to be kissing a lot of girls with strange breath. He knows what he signed up for but still.
He laughs, perhaps harder than necessary, when Mibuchi-kun suggests the reactions of the other two second years. "They'd probably be paralyzed, but then they'd want to fight. Not to kill you, but to get a place in the booth. Suddenly there'd be buy one get one free specials and no customers for the rest of the festival. Trust me, there's a reason they're not here."
'That would be nice," Reo admits. "I doubt they're all going to stick to tea and daifuku." Some of them will have thought to thoroughly prep their mouths with mints of their own, but some of them - won't have.
Which he'll survive, but if Daichi-san is serious about his suggestion, Reo's not going to turn it down.
"Oh, you mean it wasn't all just about picking on the new kids?" he teases.
"If I wasn't busy, I'd be happy to do it, but, well. The burden of the captaincy and all that." In truth he looks good in his tux, recycled as it is, and he knows it. He might come back with a bowl of them to set out, though, because if there's anything to make the girls self-conscious, it'll be the idea that they might have bad breath for this.
"No! Well. Not entirely. The seniors have usually had to do something at least this embarrassing, but I think you're probably the best person we've had in here in a while. You're not shy, you're pleasant and engaging without being salacious, and you're good looking." Daichi's more than able to turn the teasing around, but it's possibly even more embarrassing for its sincerity.
"I think we're going to have really good numbers this year."
So much more embarrassing. Reo can feel his face heating up.
He covers it pressing a hand to his chest and positively fluttering, "Daichi-san thinks I'm good-looking? Maybe too good-looking to risk being my first customer?"
. . . he didn't mean to divert the subject in quite that direction, but now that he has, he does his best to look like it was his plan all along. Better to do certain things on purpose than by accident.
It's one of Daichi's greatest gifts. It's also a weakness because honestly, who is immune to that kind of sincerity, but in this case it's the relative playfulness of Mibuchi-kun's reply that catches him off guard. Daichi stands up a little straighter and crosses his arms over his chest, but then... then he looks at the still non-existent line and the two girls who've stopped nearby but not quite close enough to be seen as customers.
They probably overheard that.
Well, fine then. He did kind of set himself up for this. After a moment, Daichi relaxes his arms and starts digging through his pockets.
"You were better looking before you started fishing, Reo-kun, but I guess someone has to be the ice breaker. I promise, I haven't eaten anything offensive." That he can remember. The prospect of kissing a teammate with an audience has him a little scattered but what's the worst he might've had, really?
A small part of Reo's mind tells him to be wary when Daichi crosses his arms. Not so long ago, that might have shown itself in Reo's body language, or a sudden stillness in his expression. Now, though, he just pushes it into the back of his head where it belongs. He doesn't need that warning anymore. He's safe on this team; even safer, in some small ways, than he had been at Rakuzan.
So it's without missing a beat that he gives Daichi an innocent smile, followed by an unrepentant laugh at the remark about fishing.
"If that's what you need to tell yourself, Daichi-san, your money's still good all the same."
For all that it makes for an impressive posture, Daichi's motion is just that: posturing. He relaxes and smiles again as soon as Mibuchi-kun laughs, turning to face the counter and offering the payment across it. He does his best to maintain a little bit of authority in the face of the continued teasing, but Mibuchi-kun has effectively gained the upper hand. He can't change his mind now.
"I don't need to tell myself anything. How're you most comfortable, though?" It's easy when it's a girl at this thing--in Daichi's experience, the girls always paid and then got kissed. He's never had to negotiate it with another guy before, though.
The look on Reo's face is, for a moment, immensely fond, before he does his best to sweep it away as something that feels vaguely disrespectful toward his senpai, considering how similar it is to the way he might look at Hinata when he puffs himself up to stubbornly insist that he can do whatever it is someone thinks he's too small to do.
But it's sweet of Daichi, and so very like him when it comes to his team, to get himself cornered and then immediately concern himself with the other person's feelings.
"I think that's my line," he says, some of that fondness still spilling over in the way the corner of his mouth refuses to stop curving up. "You are my paying customer, after all."
Then, more seriously: "What would you be most comfortable with?" Because it's one thing to tease, and quite another to ignore someone's boundaries.
Daichi's used to being looked at like that. Suga does it often, though Suga's also his peer and can get away with it. He doesn't exactly mind it from Mibuchi-kun because he knows it's not meant to be disrespectful or condescending, but he's still pretty glad to see it go.
It'd be impossible to kiss Mibuchi-kun with him looking at him like that.
"It doesn't need to be anything... complicated." He was going to say special but he's not going to assign a label like that. Simple versus complicated is so much more, well. Simple.
"The idea's always been paying for the privilege of kissing the person in the booth, as I've seen it, so... let's go with that."
Which means now he's leaning against the counter and doing his best to not pucker up like some kind of caricature. Have mercy on him here, Mibuchi-kun.
Now Daichi is starting to seem uncomfortable, which is the opposite of what Reo wants. This should be a pleasant experience, after all, even if what Daichi gets out of it is going to be a bit different from what most of Reo'a customers will.
"Let's go with that," he agrees, smiling, and leans in to kiss his captain.
He's given it some careful thought, what the appropriate kiss for a kissing booth is - too short and detached defeats the entire purpose, but too long and invested and the whole thing gets a little creepy. It's a delicate balance.
He also knows it's a balance that will vary a little from customer to customer, and he hasn't exactly had the chance to practice, so here's hoping Daichi knew he was volunteering as a guinea pig. Reo keeps it brief enough to be professional, though not so brief as to make it seem like kissing a boy is anything to be awkward about, and gentle enough to be respectful.
There may also be just the faintest hint of sensuality. You know, to make sure Daichi gets his money's worth.
Hearing Mibuchi-kun agree with him dispels a great deal of Daichi's awkwardness. Even if he's been in Mibuchi-kun's position before, treating a kiss like a business exchange is still a little weird, especially, well. Considering.
He's prepared to be a bit of a guinea pig, though he's also going into this with the assumption that Mibuchi-kun knows what he's doing. The kiss proves that pretty soundly, in Daichi's opinion. Mibuchi-kun's lips are as soft as any girls and this close Daichi can't help but notice that his teammate smells nice when he's not covered in sweat and dust like they usually are. The timing of it is fine as far as he can tell; for some reason his scalp is suddenly astonishingly warm as soon as his lips meet Mibuchi-kun's and the bulk of his attention is shifted to making sure as little of that moves to his face as possible.
Mibuchi-kun's a good kisser. Daichi does his best to respond but the kiss is so clearly thoughtful that he doesn't quite have time. As soon as they part, though, he's smiling.
"There. The ice should be sufficiently broken. If not I'm probably going to melt what's left." Because there's no point in denying he's blushing, but thinking about why is definitely going to be done later.
