[It's cute to watch the boys--they're all teeth and smiles as they get their first round of candy and compliments on their costumes. Stiles is a little surprised there aren't any tails popping out, but relieved at the same time. That'd be hard to explain.
Listening to Derek, he plays with the long ears on the hat he's wearing, putting his fingers in the pockets.]
...trust me, I know. [It's a weighty statement; he trusts Derek, certainly more than he did when they first started, but this is something different. He's not been a threat since the first month. Even when he was terrifying looking, he was never going to give the bite for no reason.
Before the boys can turn around, he puts his hands fully in the pockets of the hat and waves them, paws out.] Besides, as awesome as a werewolf cop sounds, this is about as furry as I'm planning on getting. Somebody's got to be the token humanity around here.
[ Sometimes, Derek really wishes he could keep Scott and Isaac where they are now: happy, all dimples and wagging tails, eager to please and tease. It'd be so much easier for everyone involved if they didn't have to deal with the troubles of the world outside their pack.
But they deserve every good thing that the world outside their pack can give them, and he'll make sure they get to experience it.
He doesn't reaffirm himself further, simply nods when Stiles first replies. He's not an alpha that goes around just turning people-- there's always been a reason for the bites he's delivered. Isaac was sickly and weak when they brought him in, and he needed it. The bite made Erica's life so much easier, without fear of seizures and illness. Boyd had only ever had her in his life, and that loneliness was something that Derek wanted to alleviate just as much as his son's physical pain.
If any of them had declined his offer, he would've left it at that. Not many other alphas would do the same. ]
Werewolf cop who sidelines as a volunteer teacher. [ He extends his hand from within the folds of his cloak, touching one of Stiles' hat's ears, as if actually scritching. In the end, though, he ruffles it on his head. ] Almost too ridiculous to be real, so it's probably a good thing you're sticking with your humanity.
[The boys giggle and do as they're told, careful as usual to be polite in their greetings. Even Isaac puts on a polite smile, standing straight up when he explains their costumes to the parent at the door, and holds out their bags for a 'trick-or-treat'.
He's the first to notice Stiles's change in demeanour as they walk back, but only furrows his brow, a little confused.]
What?
[Had either of them done something? Had Derek said something?]
[Snapping out of it, he turns his grin down towards the boys, then taps his own chest, reassuringly.]
Serious Stark business! See, Ned here talks to wolves when he's lonely.
[Stiles grins and starts to shoo the boys on towards the next house, but he looks back over his shoulder at Derek--for a minute, his expression softens before he beckons him to follow, too.]
[ Cocking an eyebrow as Stiles uses him as a distraction, he tilts his head towards the human masquerading as a wolf and quirks a slightly aggrieved, yet amused, look.
But it softens a bit in return for Stiles' look, and Derek chuffs faintly, a sound more befitting a wolf before he follows. ]
And feels the need to offer advice to misguided wolves sometimes. We'll teach you yet, Stilinski.
Stiles is always a wolf, yeah. Anybody in our pack is, that's why it's a pack.
[He contemplates it, though, because Isaac's confusion isn't completely unfounded; it isn't as if they were around when Hale pack was in its former prime.]
Sometimes wolves are just wolves here instead of like us.
[Scott pats his chest over his heart to demonstrate, pleased when Isaac gives him an affirmative response. The adults could have been long gone for all they cared- this was between brothers.]
You guys have been watching too many Disney movies.
[It's adorable, even if it's cliche. Little kids are allowed to be cliche, anyway. Gesturing at the next house on the path, Stiles abruptly looped his arm through Derek's and pulled him along behind the kids. It's a good distraction from the slight, embarrassed flush that's come up his cheeks from the admittance. ]
You should really stop skulking back there and walk with us. I might run off.
[ Derek doesn't even reprimand them for apparently thinking they're the ones in charge of categorizing and ranking the pack-- they're always right, when they talk about their packmates, so he doesn't see a point in it. Instead, he reaches out to touch Isaac's curls and give a little ruffle, before extending further and giving Scott one, as well. Confirming that, yeah, they're right.
When Stiles loops their arms together, he snaps his attention his way, almost looking a little owlish before he recovers. He's an odd mix of bemused and amused, looking down to their joined arms, then back up at Stiles. ]
[Isaac can't prevent the burst of curl-bouncing giggles he lets out as he grabs onto Scott's arm, trying to hide his grin. Not that the boys didn't think their dad was attractive- nooo, they knew their dad was the best-looking alpha ever. In fact, when girls tried to flirt with their dad, they weren't surprised at all.
When Derek made comments like this, however, they couldn't help but laugh. Derek rarely ever makes these kind of comments, and it's always hilarious.]
[Scott lets out a few giggles too, but he's mostly full secretive (or as secretive as Scott can get) proud preening.
Of course his dad's the most handsome alpha of all the packs in california. Wolf or human. And Scott was gonna be a strong, handsome alpha too, even if he paired with Isaac.]
[His jaw drops open for a minute, surprised--but Stiles draws his mouth into a tight line, raising his eyebrows and snorting loudly. That was definitely "daaaaaaad" worthy. Shaking his arm where they were still connected, he rolls his eyes.]
Just for that, I'm calling you that for the rest of the night and keeping you from getting any phone numbers. I'm like a reverse wingman. It's that bad.
[After a beat, he adds.] Get a move on, Foxy Hale, we've got other houses to hit.
[ How Derek manages to keep a straight face as his sons laugh at him and Stiles' jaw drops is beyond anyone, but he manages to keep the expression perfectly. Slowly, he arches an eyebrow at the reverse wingman comment, but doesn't seem bothered in the slightest bit.
In fact, that's kind of a relief. The boys can show him his haul of phone numbers from the past two years when they get back to the house. ]
You're my date for the night, anyways, Honorary Dad. [ His expression is still the same as he calmly leads them towards the next lit house. ] It'd be pretty rude of me to go around getting numbers while we're all trick-or-treating.
[Scott can't help but bite his lip, looking over at Isaac and beginning to grin. Of course he can tell his dad is joking (or trying very hard to joke) but it still gets him a little giddy.]
Oh, cause we're the same species now? Cool. [He tilts his head to incline the wolf hat on his head, but behind the decently quick response is the fact that his heartbeat definitely just tripled. What. What.
It's totally a joke. It's gotta be. Isaac's comment doesn't help, either, and he snorts a little, watching them run ahead and calling after.]
Seriously, too many Disney movies!
[...Jeez. It takes him a couple minutes to remember he's actually in the company of werewolves, and Stiles takes a quick, deep breath to try and calm his heartbeat.
I await the day that neither of you are nearly as charming as you are now, and you come whining to me about your awkward teenage problems.
[ Whether he awaits the day eagerly or with dread isn't specified, but he just rolls his eyes and scoffs softly at their retreating backs. His eyes track them as they move, though, making sure that they're not too far ahead and that no one's posing a problem.
It helps him keep from reacting to the way that he catches Stiles' heartbeat kicking up, and he wisely refrains from commenting on it.
Instead, he slips his hands in his jeans pockets again, keeping their arms linked as they walk along after the boys. ]
Aw dude, your dad's idea of romantic advice is like bringing a deer carcass to someone's door.
[Not that he actually knows, but it's not that hard to venture a guess in the right direction. He could totally see Derek dragging a dead deer down the street and leaving it in someone's yard in a confession of love. Heh.
Grinning a little, he nodded his approval at Scott.] You should ask Miss Lydia to help you. She'll be your frickin' Glinda the Good Witch.

Does Stiles always count as a wolf? It's supposed to be funny cos they switched, but Stiles is honorary. Right?
[He looks to Scott for a moment, as if only they themselves know how to categorise who is what in their little pack.]
